Last week, the Richard Fraser tournament took place. Five teams arrived to compete; Huslia, Valdez, Fort Yukon, and White Horse. Our home team, the Tok girls, won the championship and the Tok boys got third place.
Cheyanne Hipp, one of the basketball players, is happy the team won but also wishes that they had more competition. She continued to comment on how crazy she thought it was that one of our players, Trey Hillary, scored twenty-three points. He is only a sophomore, so this was quite an impressive feat. She was not happy with her performance as she said she believed she could improve on everything and that there is a lot to learn.
Ally Demit, one of our varsity girls basketball players, commented on the tournament as well. She says that she believes she did well, but that improvements could have been made. She also commented on Trey Hillary’s success in scoring the male team twenty three points, claiming that it was “tough”.
Prior to the interview’s end, she asked why one of the male basketball players could not participate in the tournament. Vaughn Arnold, the non-participant, said that he was ill the days prior to the tournament, resulting in his absence from school and basketball practice. Therefore, he could not play.
Chairo Espinosa, one of our male players, also commented on Trey Hillary’s success. He said that it was quite nice and really saved the game for them. He continued to discuss a few things he believes the team should work on. “I think one of the most impotant things is communication and working toegtehr as the team we are.”, said Chairo Espinsoa.
Lucas Hipp said, “It was honestly nice”. Mr. Hipp threw the basketball to the ground in a rather aggressive manner, unfortunately causing a technical. He says that he needs to work on improving his attitude and keeping his composure.
Tok Girls won the championship, and our Tok Boys made third place. Huslia Boys won the boys championship. Overall it was a wonderful tournament and we are thankful the teams could visit.
News about the Ninilchik games will be posted later on this week.
