The spring Alaska Association Student Governments (AASG) conference was April 24-27 in Sitka, Alaska. The seniors went, Holly Beeman, Jeffry Alsup and their advisor Ms. Fifarek all went to sitka for AASG. The purpose of AASG is to make changes within schools on a local, state, and national level. There are two conferences every year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The first conference is held somewhere on the road system and the spring conference is typically held somewhere you must fly into off the road system. Jeffry and Holly brought a resolution that was passed with unanimous consent by the general assembly of AASG. The resolution was about preventing felons who have committed barrier crimes from serving on school boards.
I interviewed the student government president Jeffry Alsup and asked him a few questions.
How was the trip?
It was so much fun! It was such a bittersweet moment as it was my last AASG but I enjoyed it very much. It was in Sitka which is my favorite place in all of Alaska and it was just such an incredible experience. It was really fun, and nerve racking, presenting a resolution for the very first time. It helped a lot having people on the Executive Board look over it and having a friend help present with me.
How were the assemblies?
The assemblies were so hype. All of the regions had such fun cheers, and even region 2 cheered more than usual. It was also fun to see the present E-Board run the assemblies, especially seeing the president Danika be the sidebar queen. We also got through, I believe, 22 resolutions which is more than we have gotten through at any conference I have been to.
Was it better than previous AASG trips?
It's really hard to decide if the spring conference last year in Utqiagvik was better than this one. I think that it is pretty tied between the two. I think I might have enjoyed this one slightly more since I now have even more friends and it was my final AASG so I tried to get the most out of it as possible.
Are you gonna miss it?
I am going to miss going so much. I really wish Tok School sent kids to AASG every year but we only started to go again my junior year. If we had gone since I was a freshman I think I could have gotten a position on the E-Board. I also wish the school was able to send more kids and I hope they continue to send kids as AASG makes students more informed on issues in our state, gets them involved, and pushes students out of their comfort zone in an impactful way.
What's your favorite AASG memory?
My favorite part of AASG is connecting with other students all across the state and hearing what is going on in their schools and districts across the state. If I had to pick a favorite memory It would probably be the dance at BHS last year. I also really liked playing volleyball with people in the gym in delta.
Sounds like he's really gonna miss all the AASG trips. We are all gonna miss him, Congratulations Jeffry Alsup!!
